Prosecutor General Aliyev: Verdict on Azerbaijani embassy attack in Iran imminent
Negotiations regarding the punishment of the individual responsible for the attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran are ongoing, said Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General, Kamran Aliyev to journalists following his visit to the Alley of Honour.
According to him, the matter is procedural in nature, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
"We are currently awaiting the confirmation of the relevant decision by the other party," Aliyev added.
Notably, Azerbaijan's Embassy in Iran was subjected to a violent attack on the morning of January 27, 2023, at approximately 08:30.
The assailant, armed with a Kalashnikov automatic rifle, destroyed the embassy's security post and killed security chief, Orkhan Asgarov. Two other security team members Vasif Taghiyev and Mahir Imanov, sustained injuries while heroically preventing the attack.
Orkhan Asgarov was laid to rest in the Second Martyrs' Alley. On February 3, 2023, the President of Azerbaijan posthumously honoured him with the "For the Fatherland" medal. Additionally, Vasif Taghiyev was awarded the 1st Class "Rashadat" Order, while Mahir Imanov received the "For the Fatherland" medal for their courageous actions.
Yasin Huseynzade, the perpetrator of the terrorist attack, was quickly apprehended.
In the aftermath of the attack, Azerbaijan suspended its embassy operations in Tehran. On January 29, 2023, embassy staff and their families were evacuated to Baku, with 53 people returning home.
Following negotiations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran resumed its operations at a new address on July 15, 2024.
