Romanian president critiques EU leadership, agrees with Trump’s comments
Romania’s President Nicușor Dan said there is “some” truth in US President Donald Trump’s assessment that European leaders can be “weak,” noting that the continent can be slow to make crucial decisions.
Speaking to Politico, Dan cited the recent EU deliberations over funding for Ukraine as an example.
“For example, it took months of argument and a fraught summit in Brussels last week that ended at 3 a.m. to agree on a way to fund Ukraine. But — crucially — even a fractious EU did eventually take ‘the important decision,’” he said.
Additionally, a recent article by the European Conservative also criticised the European Commission’s handling of frozen Russian assets, describing it as a “fiasco.”
“This is a Commission that confuses moralistic fervour and emotional manipulation with legal authority, and slogan-infested political theatre with actual power,” the article reads.
EU leaders agreed to provide the loan to Ukraine specifically for the procurement of weapons, funded by the EU itself. Notably, Brussels rejected the proposal to finance Ukraine using Russia’s frozen assets, opting instead for a mechanism that channels EU resources directly to Kyiv.
