Russia, Iran FM's hold phone talks on Middle East peace, nuclear issues
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
According to the statement, the ministers engaged in a “constructive exchange of views on pressing regional issues,” with a particular focus on promoting a political and diplomatic resolution to Afghan-Pakistani tensions.
On the subject of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Lavrov and Araghchi emphasised the importance of achieving lasting peace based on widely recognised international legal frameworks, highlighting the need to fully consider existing resolutions on the establishment of a Palestinian state in the ongoing work of the UN Security Council.
The discussion also included a review of Iran’s nuclear programme ahead of the upcoming session of the IAEA Board of Governors.
The statement noted that both ministers expressed “deep satisfaction” with the growing frequency of bilateral contacts at various levels, which are seen as contributing to the further development of the Russia-Iran comprehensive strategic partnership.
The talks were initiated by the Iranian side.
