Russia rules out return of death penalty, says Prosecutor General
Russia has ruled out any possibility of reinstating the death penalty, reaffirming its longstanding legal and constitutional stance on the issue.
The statement was made by Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov during a committee session at the Federation Council, the upper chamber of the Russian parliament, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Speaking to lawmakers, Krasnov stated unequivocally that the death penalty will not return to the Russian legal system and that the government’s position is both final and constitutionally grounded.
“My opinion is unequivocal: it is impossible, and the state's position on this matter is final. It is based on fundamental rulings by the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation,” Krasnov said.
The Prosecutor General acknowledged that the public’s desire for just retribution is entirely understandable.
“However,” he remarked, “in this context, it is essential that we uphold the fundamental principle of the inevitability of punishment for individuals who commit crimes and engage in acts posing a serious threat to society. The justice system must, above all, guarantee proportionate and equitable punishment for such offenders.”
