Russia’s secret drone project in China

27 September 2024 03:26

An article by Foreign Policy argues that Russia is reportedly collaborating with China to develop long-range attack drones, specifically the Garpiya-3 (G3), designed for use in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The piece notes that the Chinese Foreign Ministry has denied knowledge of this initiative, emphasizing Beijing's neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war and its strict export controls on drones. If confirmed, this project would mark a significant step in military cooperation, as it would involve Chinese companies supplying entire weapon systems to Moscow—an escalation from previous exchanges of dual-use goods.

According to reports, Russian state-owned IEMZ Kupol has been working on the G3 drones in China, which are capable of flying over 1,200 miles with a payload of around 110 pounds. Seven of these military drones have already been delivered to Russia. The US has expressed deep concern regarding the report, indicating that there is currently no evidence that the Chinese government was aware of the project.

Additionally, as Russia seeks to expand its drone production, President Vladimir Putin announced ambitions to ramp up annual output from 140,000 to nearly 1.4 million drones by year’s end. Meanwhile, Iran appears to be engaging Russia in discussions to arm militant groups in the Middle East, further complicating regional security dynamics.

In Israel, tensions are escalating as military officials prepare for a potential ground incursion into Lebanon amidst ongoing attacks on Hezbollah targets. This comes after Israel intercepted a missile launched by Hezbollah, marking a significant increase in the threat level.

In a separate but significant development, China conducted its first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test in over four decades, a move criticized by foreign leaders for lacking transparency. This test highlights China's growing military capabilities amid international concerns about regional security.

Lastly, Tuvalu’s Prime Minister has called for the United Nations to recognize the island nation’s statehood and maritime boundaries, as rising sea levels threaten its existence. This plea underscores the urgent need for changes in international law to address the realities of climate change impacting vulnerable nations.
