Russian Kamikaze drones hit Ukrainian gas pipeline Fire visible from Romania / Video
On August 6, a drone strike overnight targeted the Izmail district in Ukraine’s Odessa region, damaging gas infrastructure and causing a fire that was visible from neighbouring Romania.
The attack involved kamikaze drones launched by Russian forces, according to reports from Ukrainian media, citing Romanian news outlet and Oleg Kiper, head of the Odessa Regional Military Administration.
Romanian emergency services received 19 calls to their 112 hotline reporting a fire triggered by the strike on Ukrainian soil. The air raid alert in Romania lasted around 90 minutes.
Romania’s Ministry of National Defence confirmed that, using special detection equipment, Russian targets were identified close to the northern border with Romania, near the Danube River and the Kiliya-Veke branch.
The fire confused Romanian locals, who initially believed the blaze was nearby. Oleg Kiper confirmed the attack and said that, despite active Ukrainian air defences, the gas infrastructure was damaged.
“Despite the active work of our air defence forces, there has been damage to gas infrastructure. A fire broke out on site, which was extinguished by our firefighters. Gas is now being safely released from the system,” Kiper said.
He added that the flames destroyed production equipment. Due to damage to the main gas pipeline, 2,500 subscribers have been temporarily disconnected from the supply.
