Serbia prioritizes Azerbaijan in expanding gas, power infrastructure—expert

09 April 2026 19:34

Developing energy cooperation with Azerbaijan remains a strategic priority for Serbia, Serbian energy expert Andrej Bojic told local media.

Bojic emphasized that the relationship between the two countries has deepened in recent years, supported by strong personal ties between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

“We are seeing not only the consolidation of existing cooperation but also the emergence of entirely new joint energy projects,” he said.

One of the most significant initiatives, according to Bojic, is a planned high-capacity gas-fired power plant near the Serbian city of Niš, which is expected to play a central role in the country’s energy transition.

“In this transitional process, electricity is considered one of the main energy carriers and plays a key role in the future development of the country’s economy. The same approach applies to the gas sector. Serbia has enormous potential for developing gas infrastructure, and we need natural gas from all our friends and partners. In this regard, Azerbaijan is undoubtedly among the top priorities,” he noted.

Bojic also highlighted that the contract for Azerbaijan’s gas supplies to Serbia via the Bulgaria–Serbia interconnector pipeline has been extended until the end of 2026, ensuring continuity in energy imports and reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
