SOCAR considers hybrid gasification project in North Macedonia, regional head says

08 September 2025 12:45

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is exploring the implementation of a hybrid gasification project in North Macedonia, said Murad Heydarov, Head of SOCAR for the Balkans.

Heydarov confirmed that SOCAR has commenced natural gas supplies to North Macedonia and is actively assessing innovative solutions to expand access to cleaner energy across the country, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

“We are considering a hybrid gasification project for North Macedonia. There is potential to transport compressed natural gas (CNG) from Bulgaria to North Macedonia to supply key social facilities,” Heydarov stated. “Our intention is to prioritize institutions such as hospitals, schools, and other public service centers. The social dimension of our initiatives in the Balkans is a central focus.”

SOCAR’s proposal involves leveraging Bulgaria's experience with CNG logistics to deliver gas via road transportation, offering a flexible and scalable solution for areas not yet connected to the pipeline grid.

Heydarov also highlighted North Macedonia’s broader strategy to enhance energy security and diversify its gas supply sources. A critical component of this strategy includes reliance on the Alexandroupolis LNG terminal in Greece, from which a planned interconnector pipeline will link Greek and North Macedonian gas networks.

“North Macedonia places significant expectations on the Alexandroupolis terminal. They are actively working toward building a pipeline to connect with Greece, which aligns with their diversification goals,” he noted.

Heydarov emphasized Azerbaijan’s role as a reliable energy partner, underscoring the successful commencement of gas deliveries as a testament to SOCAR’s commitment to supporting the region’s energy transition.

“We believe the hybrid gasification project is both technically feasible and strategically aligned with North Macedonia’s energy needs. At the same time, we are committed to ensuring uninterrupted and sustainable gas supplies to this emerging market,” he concluded.
