SOCAR embarks on new era of exploration with airborne gravimetric studies PHOTO

01 February 2025 14:55

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has begun its first-ever onshore airborne gravimetric studies, in collaboration with the renowned British company Metatek.

This pioneering method will enable SOCAR to gather highly accurate data from large areas in a short period of time, marking a significant advancement in the company's exploration capabilities, Caliber.Az reports.

According to SOCAR, the research will employ the latest eFTG (enhanced Full Tensor Gravity) technology, developed by the globally recognized Lockheed Martin. In addition to gravimetric measurements, a 3D terrain model will be generated using magnetic measurements and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology. The results from this study will provide a more detailed understanding of underground rock formations and structures, as well as help identify potential oil, gas, and other natural resources.

SOCAR, founded in 1992 and headquartered in Baku, plays a critical role in Azerbaijan's energy sector. The company is actively involved in all stages of the oil and gas industry, including exploration, production, refining, transportation, and distribution of oil and gas products. SOCAR's operations span beyond Azerbaijan, with partnerships and projects across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

A key project for SOCAR is the Shah Deniz gas field, one of the largest gas fields in the world, which is vital for supplying natural gas to Europe through the Southern Gas Corridor. Additionally, SOCAR plays a significant role in the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, transporting oil from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean and contributing to Europe's energy security.

In recent years, SOCAR has also expanded its focus to include sustainable energy, with investments in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, as well as projects in green hydrogen development.
