SOCAR president: Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan poised for key role in energy transition

23 October 2025 15:08

Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are well-positioned to play an active role in the regional and global energy transition, SOCAR President Rovshan Najaf said.

Speaking at the “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan” (OGT-2025) International Conference in Ashgabat on October 22, he said the global energy market is changing rapidly, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkmen media.

Rovshan Najaf noted that as many countries set net-zero targets in pursuit of a sustainable future, demand for natural gas is rising faster than for other fuels, with the decline in coal use making gas a cleaner and more reliable alternative.

According to him, gas serves as a crucial “bridge fuel” in the transition to low-carbon energy, promoting environmental progress and energy security, and in this context, cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan holds strategic importance.

“The growing role of Turkmen gas in regional and global energy reflects the country’s clear vision for diversification and sustainable development,” Najaf added.

He emphasised that expanding gas cooperation strengthens partnership and opens new opportunities for Turkmen gas to reach international markets, contributing to export growth and a sustainable energy transition: “SOCAR has long maintained mutually beneficial cooperation with the state concerns Türkmengaz and Türkmennebit.”

The 30th International Conference and Exhibition “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan – 2025” (OGT-2025)  is currently taking place in Ashgabat from October 22 to 24.

The exhibition focuses on the oil and gas industry — a cornerstone of the country’s economic success. By developing a stable legal framework aligned with international standards, Turkmenistan has created favourable conditions to attract investment into the oil and gas sector.
