Spain bolsters Ukraine's defence with over 7,000 soldiers trained since 2022
Since 2022, Spain has trained over 7,000 Ukrainian soldiers as part of the European Union’s mission to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
The training courses offered to Ukrainian servicemen have been diverse, ranging from basic training for new recruits to more specialized programs, including direct support from the air, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
These efforts are part of Spain's broader commitment to supporting Ukraine in its defence against Russian aggression.
The Spanish General Staff emphasized that the training programs have been comprehensive, designed to improve the skills and capabilities of Ukrainian troops across various areas. Additionally, for the first time, in late 2024, Spain began offering courses on international humanitarian law, further enhancing the education of Ukrainian soldiers.
This initiative underscores Spain's role in strengthening Ukraine's military capacity as part of ongoing international support. With a focus on both military skills and legal frameworks, Spain’s training mission is contributing to Ukraine’s overall defense readiness and compliance with international norms.
In January 2025, Spain's Defence Minister, Margarita Robles, announced that the country was prepared to initiate new training courses for Ukrainian army soldiers. She reaffirmed Spain's "firm commitment to Ukraine and the security of Europe," emphasizing the nation's ongoing dedication to supporting Ukraine in its defence efforts and contributing to broader European stability.
