TotalEnergies: First gas to be extracted from Absheron field in coming weeks

A vice president of TotalEnergies Europe has announced the first gas extraction from the Absheron gas-condensate field in the coming weeks.

“In the coming weeks, the first gas will be extracted from the Absheron gas-condensate field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea,” Jean-Luc Guiziou, Senior Vice President Europe, Exploration and Production at TotalEnergies said at the Baku Energy Week on June 1, according to Report.

He added that “Azerbaijan plays an important role in gas supply to Europe”.

The Absheron field has been developed by Azerbaijan’s state energy firm SOCAR and France’s TotalEnergies (formerly known as TOTAL) since 2016.

It’s expected that the field will reach its peak production in 2024 as part of the first stage of development – 1.5 billion cubic metres (bcm) per year and this figure will remain on a plateau for several years.

The total reserves of the offshore Absheron field are estimated at 300-360 bcm of gas and 100 million tonnes of condensate.

At the peak of production, the project can extract about 5 bcm of gas per year. Gas from the second stage of development can be exported, the terms and conditions of this operation are being discussed. The field can produce about 10,000 barrels of condensate daily.
