Trump, Putin speak at length, but no breakthrough on Ukraine conflict
On June 3, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a lengthy phone conversation, but there was no progress reported on efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Speaking before boarding Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Trump said that the call was pretty long and that they talked about a lot of things, including Iran, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
We also talked about the war with Ukraine, and I’m not happy about that.”
Asked if any progress was made, the President replied: “No, I didn’t make any progress.”
The White House did not release an official summary of the call. However, a spokesperson for Putin, Yuri Ushakov, said the leaders did not discuss a recent pause in weapons shipments to Ukraine during their nearly two-hour discussion.
On the subject of weapons support, Trump gave an ambiguous response: “We haven’t. We’re giving weapons. But we’ve given so many weapons. But we are giving weapons and we’re working with them and trying to help them. But we haven’t.”
He also criticised the previous US administration, stating: “Joe Biden emptied out our whole country giving them weapons,” and stressed the need for the US to “make sure we have enough for ourselves.”
President Trump is scheduled to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on June 4.
