“Trump Route” could strengthen regional connectivity, says US policy expert

05 November 2025 18:31

Discussions on the “Trump Route” project, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and economic cooperation, were held in Washington this week, bringing together representatives from Armenia, Azerbaijan, the United States, and international companies. Laura Linderman, Director of Programs at the Central Asia–Caucasus Institute, described the initiative as a potential game-changer for the South Caucasus, highlighting its role in fostering economic integration, creating jobs, and establishing robust transport corridors across the region.

“I do not know the exact date when work on the ‘Trump Route’ project will begin on the ground, but I know that even today an event was held in Washington, attended by representatives from Armenia, the US, Azerbaijan, and other interested companies to discuss cooperation within the framework of this project,” Linderman said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

When asked whether these discussions involved both Armenia and Azerbaijan, she confirmed:

“Yes, in Washington, interested companies—American companies—are meeting with representatives of the business sectors of Azerbaijan and Armenia.”

On the project’s interaction with other regional transport initiatives, such as China’s Belt and Road Initiative, Linderman highlighted the importance of connectivity:

“The more transit corridors there are connecting the Caucasus with Central Asia and Europe, and also connecting north to south, the better. This means more economic integration for Armenia, which will create more jobs and a better future for Armenians living in Armenia. I am very positive about the addition of these corridors.”

Addressing how the “Trump Route” could affect the South Caucasus both economically and geopolitically, she said:

“I believe this is a game-changing initiative and could be quite beneficial for the South Caucasus in the future. The more the region is able to cooperate, the stronger it will be in dealing with challenging neighbors. This provides greater leverage for economic integration and for establishing robust routes across the region.”

Regarding the coordination of the project, Linderman explained:

“As I understand it, various international companies from Europe, Central Asia, and the United States are involved. Therefore, I believe that multiple companies will participate in implementing the ‘Trump Route.’”

When asked whether Russia would be integrated into the process, she stated:

“I do not think Russia will be integrated into this corridor process at all. But perhaps they have other corridors they are working on with Armenia, such as the North–South corridor.”
