Turkish MP condemns PACE’s attitude towards Azerbaijan

02 February 2025 15:58

Yıldırım Tuğrul Türkeş, a Turkish MP and head of the Turkish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), has condemned the Assembly for its continued wrong policy towards Azerbaijan, including Georgia, calling it to change this approach.

"The steps taken towards Azerbaijan last year were also wrong, every country has the right to sovereignty. Observers from many countries, as well as international organizations, monitored the elections in Azerbaijan. However, the PACE approach was wrong. Some countries of the Council of Europe consider themselves above the democracies of the world. This is wrong!" Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

He said PACE also takes the wrong position towards Georgia: "Observers who monitored the elections in Georgia do not speak of any violations of the law. Two parties participated in the elections there and the difference between them was 43 percent. However, some PACE members are demanding that repeat elections be held in Georgia. No violations were recorded in connection with the elections in Georgia. However, PACE is not satisfied with these elections and believes that they should be held again. This is the wrong approach."

The head of the Turkish delegation to PACE noted that if a country invites observers to elections, this is an indicator of its good intentions. Therefore, PACE's approach to countries is wrong.

He believes that changes and updating of the rules in PACE are necessary.
