Media: Israel, Syria to continue negotiations in Baku, Paris

21 August 2025 16:58

Israel and Syria have reached agreement on around 80% of their outstanding disputes and plan to continue security negotiations in Baku and Paris, according to Saudi broadcaster Al Arabiya, citing sources familiar with the talks.

Key discussion points include the potential revival of the 1974 disengagement agreement and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Syria. Sources noted that security arrangements in the region are nearly finalised, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media

The developments follow a meeting in Paris between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and an Israeli delegation, during which both sides discussed measures to enhance stability in southern Syria.

The meeting concluded with agreements to intensify efforts to de-escalate tensions, refrain from interference in Syria’s internal affairs, and support initiatives that stabilise the region, including monitoring the ceasefire in Suwayda.

The talks were conducted under US mediation, part of ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at maintaining regional security, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Tensions in Syria escalated sharply on July 13, as violent clashes broke out in the southern province of Suwayda between Arab tribal militias and local Druze self-defence units. In response to the unrest, Syria’s Interior and Defence Ministries deployed special forces to the provincial capital to reestablish order and initiated a comprehensive security operation across the region.

Simultaneously, Israel conducted airstrikes targeting Syrian military convoys, justifying the attacks as protective measures for the Druze population residing in the area.
