Azerbaijani, Cypriot FMs discuss South Caucasus peace
On August 20, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov held a telephone conversation with his Cypriot counterpart, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, discussing the recent fruitful peace efforts between Baku and Yerevan.
The Foreign Ministry told Caliber.Az that Kombos congratulated Azerbaijan on the progress achieved in the normalisation process with Armenia, following President Ilham Aliyev’s recent visit to the United States.
The ministers also discussed plans related to Cyprus’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, as well as broader regional issues.
Kombos expressed Cyprus’ readiness to contribute to peace in the region during its EU presidency.
The conversation also included an exchange of views on other matters of mutual interest.
Cyprus will assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first half of 2026 (January–June), marking its second time in this role since 2012. This presidency is part of a rotating system where EU member states chair the Council for six months, working in "trio" groups to ensure continuity over an 18-month period. Cyprus forms a trio with Poland (January–June 2025) and Denmark (July–December 2025), with a shared program focusing on a strong, secure, prosperous, competitive, free, and democratic Europe.
