Baku Court hears witness account of Khojaly tragedy

21 August 2025 15:15

A survivor of the 1992 Khojaly massacre has given harrowing testimony at the Baku Military Court, describing how her family endured captivity and violence during the conflict.

Speaking at the hearing on August 21, Rahila Hajiyeva recalled being taken hostage along with her relatives in February 1992, when Armenian armed forces seized the town of Khojaly, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

Hajiyeva, who had previously lived in Khankendi before relocating to Shusha and then to Khojaly amid growing tensions in 1988, told the court that her husband had fought in the battles.

According to her testimony, Armenian fighters placed a bounty on his life.

“My husband was beheaded. My ten-year-old daughter was thrown from a second-floor window and broke her leg. In captivity, we were constantly tortured,” she said.

Hajiyeva also recounted how Armenian soldiers allegedly cut open the stomach of a pregnant woman from Khankendi.

The trial in Baku concerns Armenian nationals accused of crimes against peace and humanity, including genocide, war crimes, terrorism, and the violent seizure of power. Proceedings continue.
