Turkish president urges Europe to combat terrorism in Syria
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on European nations to take greater responsibility in combating terrorism in Syria and supporting the country's reconstruction efforts.
Speaking at a press briefing, Erdogan welcomed the recent decision by the United States to lift sanctions on Syria, describing it as a “very important and meaningful” step. He expressed hope that the move, taken by US President Donald Trump, would serve as a model for other international actors, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.
“I hope my friend Trump’s decision will serve as an example to all relevant parties, especially the EU,” he noted.
Erdogan also emphasised Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with Syria, revealing that relations with the Syrian government were strengthening. He noted that Syrian President Ahmed Sharaa had visited Türkiye twice and described their talks as “extremely productive.”
“This approach will not only contribute to peace and stability in Syria but also have a positive impact on neighbouring Iraq,” he added.
