Türkiye pushes for democratic civilian government in Syria, FM says
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that Türkiye wants a democratic civilian government to be established in Syria.
According to him, the Turkish side will help the new authorities in Damascus, Caliber.Az reports via Arab media.
“We seek to establish a democratic civilian authority in Syria. We do not want the new authorities in Syria to repeat the actions of Bashar al-Assad. Türkiye is not going to replace Iran in Syria. I don't think Syria will become an arena for disputes, given that Tehran is aware of the new situation,” Fidan emphasised.
The minister added that Türkiye is ready to mediate between Washington and the new authorities in Syria.
In addition, Fidan said that Ankara “at the highest level coordinates actions on the situation in Syria with Saudi Arabia.”
Notably, on December 8, opposition fighters entered Damascus, causing government forces to withdraw from the city. Following these developments, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad left office and fled the country to Moscow where Russian President Vladimir Putin had personally granted him and his family asylum.
