Türkiye reaffirms commitment to opening Zangezur corridor
Türkiye remains firmly committed to the opening of the Zangezur Corridor, with ongoing efforts to advance the strategic project, Deputy Chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Kürşad Zorlu said during a party meeting in Edirne.
Zorlu stated that appropriate steps are being taken toward the implementation of the corridor, which he said would play a transformative role in turning the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) into a key regional alliance promoting peace and prosperity, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He underlined that the corridor would establish direct road connectivity between Türkiye and Azerbaijan. According to Zorlu, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is demonstrating strong political will on the matter, and in-depth discussions are currently underway between the two countries.
Highlighting the broader regional significance of the project, Zorlu noted that the corridor would also serve as a major transit route for cargo shipments originating from China and destined for Europe, passing through Türkiye.
On July 10, 2025, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met in Abu Dhabi for a bilateral discussion aimed at advancing the peace process between their countries.
The talks were held without external intermediaries, reflecting a move towards direct dialogue in a neutral setting. The leaders discussed progress on delimiting the 1,000-kilometre shared border, as well as the establishment of the Zangezur corridor, a transport link connecting mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave.
Both sides agreed to begin preparations to initial a peace agreement, moving closer to formalising the draft treaty outlined earlier in the year. While the meeting was constructive, some issues remain unresolved.
Azerbaijan has called on Armenia to amend its constitution to remove territorial claims and to formally renounce the OSCE Minsk Group, which Baku regards as outdated. The United States expressed support for the peace efforts and stability in the region.
