UN official: Global governance needs urgent transformation to address today's challenges
Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva, emphasised at the opening of the XII Global Baku Forum that the global governance system must be more effective and responsive to the evolving challenges of the present day.
Valovaya stated that the international cooperation must evolve and adapt to contemporary challenges through reforms, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The UN provides humanitarian aid in 120 countries, but some of the objectives within the sustainable development agenda remain unmet. She highlighted that global relations must deepen, with work continuing in areas such as sustainable development and the transformation of global governance.
She also pointed out that hundreds of millions of people are being forced to leave their homes. Despite the ongoing assistance, some goals set for achievement by 2033 remain unrealised, leading to substantial financial losses.
Valovaya emphasised the need for more active discussions on issues affecting the global order, asserting that multilateral cooperation must adapt to the challenges of the 21st century.
Notably, the XII Global Baku Forum, taking place on March 13 to 15, is organised by the Nizami Ganjavi International Centre.
This year’s theme, "Rethinking World Order: Turning Challenges into Opportunities," brings together current and former heads of state and government, ministers, parliamentarians, Nobel Prize winners, scientists, and experts from around the world.
The forum provides a vital platform for addressing urgent global issues, including multilateral diplomacy, the multipolar world order, post-conflict reconstruction, and the role of middle powers in the changing world order.
