UN nuclear chief heads to Tehran in bid to revive dialogue
The head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, has announced plans to travel to Tehran later this week for official talks amid ongoing diplomatic efforts over Iran’s nuclear programme.
Grossi, who serves as Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), announced via a post on X, Caliber.Az reports.
“Timely to welcome Iran’s Ambassador Reza Najafi to IAEAorg for the presentation of his credentials, ahead of my travel to Tehran later this week. Continued engagement and cooperation with the Agency is essential at a time when diplomatic solutions are urgently needed,” he wrote.
As of April 14, 2025, U.S.-Iran nuclear tensions have intensified amid fragile diplomatic efforts and looming military threats. Following initial talks in Oman described as "positive" by both sides, a second round is scheduled for April 19 in Rome, with Omani mediators facilitating discussions.
Despite these diplomatic overtures, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has dismissed negotiations with the U.S. as "unwise," citing past breaches of agreements by Washington. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would prompt an "immediate and decisive response," potentially leading to a "very bad disaster" for the region.
President Donald Trump has indicated a swift decision on Iran's nuclear program, emphasizing that military action remains an option if diplomacy fails. Israel, sharing U.S. concerns, is reportedly preparing for potential military action should Iran not comply with nuclear agreements.
