UNSC session: Lebanon condemns Israel, warns of global insecurity
In a recent emergency session of the UN Security Council, tensions flared as Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib condemned Israel's actions, asserting that the current situation threatens global safety.
“If Israel is not contained, no one else in the world can feel safe,” he stated, highlighting the repercussions of Israel's military actions, Caliber.Az reports via Israeli media.
Bou Habib criticized the IDF’s cyberattack on communication devices, which he claimed injured thousands of innocent civilians, including women and children. He presented photos illustrating the aftermath of Hezbollah’s extensive pager bombing to underscore the impact of these operations.
“The responsibility of the UN Security Council extends beyond just the innocent victims in Lebanon,” he continued. “It is a duty to all of humanity. If the Council fails to condemn this terrorist act and compel the perpetrator to cease such actions, no one will ever feel secure again. By committing this atrocity, Israel has opened Pandora's box. Now, extremist groups will likely replicate these tactics, targeting civilian infrastructure from household appliances to passenger aeroplanes. The threat of terrorists using advanced technology for attacks will grow.”
UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk labelled the use of Hezbollah's communications equipment as “contrary to international law” and called for a thorough investigation into those responsible, expressing his horror at the situation.
In response, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Dani Danon emphasized that Israel has long urged the Security Council to enforce Resolution 1701 and criticized its inaction regarding ongoing violations. “It’s time for Hezbollah and Iran to be held accountable for their actions,” he stated. “Hezbollah must be disarmed, and Iran must answer for its role in destabilizing the region.”
