US to supply Ukraine with RQ-20 Puma AE reconnaissance drones
The US Defense Department has awarded the first contract under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.
The deal worth $19.7 million was signed with the AeroVironment company to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with hand-launched RQ-20 Puma AE reconnaissance drones, Defense News portal reports.
The contract includes the supply of the UAVs, a package of spare parts, logistical support of the contractor and training of Ukrainian military personnel. The work is due to be completed by May 30. The number of drones to be provided to Kyiv is not specified.
According to a company fact sheet, the drone has a range of about 12 miles and its battery provides more than three hours of flight time. It has a wingspan of about 9 feet and weighs 14 pounds. The UAV is equipped with an electro-optical and infrared camera and an illuminator on a mechanical gimbaled payload. The drone can only perform reconnaissance functions.
