US two-time Olympic champion’s training secrets From micro goals to battling burnout

15 July 2024 06:02

Standing tall at six-foot-seven and weighing 320 pounds, Crouser is not only a two-time Olympic champion in shot put but also a testament to the meticulous preparation and sheer determination required to excel at the highest level of competition.

As he gears up to defend his shot put title at the Paris 2024 Olympics, two-time gold medalist Ryan Crouser has lifted the lid on his rigorous training regimen and formidable diet, providing a glimpse into the life of an elite athlete committed to excellence.

Crouser, standing at six-foot-seven and weighing 320 pounds, maintains an astounding daily intake of around 5,000 calories to sustain his size and strength, crucial for his athletic pursuits, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

Speaking to CNBC Make It, the athlete detailed his dietary routine which includes a hefty breakfast of a five-egg omelet with cheese, turkey sausage, oatmeal, and blueberries. Lunches typically feature a pound of lean ground beef or chicken paired with 12 ounces of rice, while dinner, shared with his girlfriend, consists of meals designed for a family of four, with Crouser consuming three servings totaling 1,200 calories.

Reflecting on the financial commitment to his nutrition, Crouser acknowledges the costs, stating, "It definitely gets expensive. I’m at $200 to $250 a week for myself alone." However, he views this expenditure as an investment in his athletic performance, opting for high-quality, organic foods despite the premium prices.

At 31 years old, Crouser recognizes the challenges of aging in a demanding sport like shot put. He emphasizes the importance of setting "micro goals" to maintain motivation and track progress, shifting his training focus from sheer intensity to a balanced approach that conserves energy while honing technical skills.

"When I’m struggling with the mental aspect I ask myself ‘Well, what else would I be doing?’" Crouser shares, highlighting his resilience in combating burnout by reminding himself of the alternative of an office job. He credits this perspective for helping him navigate tough times and stay committed to his athletic journey.

As he prepares for Paris 2024, Crouser continues to push his limits, driven by incremental successes and a deep-seated passion for his sport. His dedication to maintaining peak performance underscores his status as a formidable contender aiming to add more accolades to his illustrious career.
