CGIAR: Water reuse in agriculture can help reduce water scarcity

19 June 2026 14:49

The development of treatment technologies and the reuse of water in agriculture could help reduce water scarcity, lower risks to food security, and address malnutrition, Ismahane Elouafi, Executive Managing Director of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), has stated.

Speaking at a panel discussion at the 51st Annual Meeting of the Islamic Development Bank Group in Baku, she said wastewater treatment and reuse are becoming strategically important amid growing global water scarcity, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

She made it clear that many countries lack the financial resources to build the necessary infrastructure and adopt modern technologies.

According to her, increased investment in innovative technologies is needed to reduce the cost of wastewater treatment.

The CGIAR head added that environmental monitoring of wastewater should become an important tool for protecting food security and public health.

Monitoring systems for water, soil, animal health, and human health can help identify risks and emerging diseases in time, as well as counter threats such as antimicrobial resistance.
