13 July 2026 15:12

Ian Saunders, Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO), has praised Azerbaijan's customs service for its digital transformation, the integration of artificial intelligence, and the implementation of advanced technological solutions during his first visit to the country.

Speaking at a briefing hosted by Azerbaijan's State Customs Committee (SCC), Saunders said he had been introduced to the customs service's digital reforms, modern management practices, and innovative projects, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

As part of the visit, the WCO chief toured the Target Centre and the Customs History Museum, and held discussions with SCC officials on contemporary approaches and emerging challenges in the customs sector.

Saunders also highlighted the longstanding and productive cooperation between Azerbaijan and the WCO, noting that the country actively contributes to the organization's activities by accrediting experts who participate in international support programs and by promoting international customs cooperation.

He further emphasized Azerbaijan's financial support for the WCO's efforts to strengthen the institutional capacity of customs administrations in other countries, while also sharing its expertise and best practices with the global customs community.
