White House: US defence budget to hit $1 trillion in 2026

02 May 2025 21:19

The US is set to significantly boost its defence budget, with military spending projected to reach $1.01 trillion in the 2026 fiscal year, according to a draft federal budget released by the White House.

The proposed budget outlines a 13 per cent increase in defence allocations compared to the 2025 fiscal year, marking one of the most substantial year-on-year hikes in recent years, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

The draft federal budget outlines what the administration calls “historic investments” in domestic security, allocating $175 billion to enhance border protection and internal safety. At the same time, President Trump has proposed a 22.6 per cent cut to non-defence discretionary spending, bringing it down to $163 billion.

Despite the reduction, funding will be maintained for key areas including homeland security, law enforcement, infrastructure, as well as benefits for veterans and seniors.

On April 30, President Trump announced that he would reconsider several recommendations made by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by billionaire Elon Musk. According to Trump, Musk’s department uncovered widespread waste and fraud across federal agencies, with estimated losses amounting to billions of dollars.
