MFA: Embassy attack provoked by anti-Azerbaijan campaign in Iran
POLITICS 27 January 2023 - 14:21
Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry has said that an armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran was provoked by the anti-Azerbaijani campaign conducted in Iran.
The ministry made the remarks in a statement posted on its website on January 27, Caliber.Az reports.
"The Iranian side, as the host country of the embassy, had to fulfil the obligation to ensure the security of the embassy and its staff, arising from the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Attempts to threaten our diplomatic mission in Iran have been made before, and Azerbaijan has constantly raised before Iran questions about preventing such cases and taking measures to ensure the security of our diplomatic missions. Unfortunately, the latest bloody terrorist attack demonstrates the grave consequences of the lack of due attention to our persistent calls in this direction. We have come to the conclusion that the recent anti-Azerbaijani campaign in Iran provoked this attack on our diplomatic mission," the ministry said.
The statement condemned "the treacherous terrorist attack" on the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran.
"We strongly demand from Iran that the perpetrators of the terrorist attack, as well as the masterminds of this bloody crime, be identified as soon as possible and punished in the most severe way. Azerbaijan will use all possibilities within the framework of international mechanisms to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and punished. We plan to take measures to evacuate embassy staff and their family members," the statement added.
