Armenians rallying against exploitation of copper mine in Mehri
The residents of Mehri District in Armenia's Syunik Region (Zangazur) are protesting against the exploitation of the Lichk copper mine.
The protesters claim that the operation of the mine poses a threat to the health of the residents of Mehri, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
A petition has been launched, which has so far been signed by 3,500 citizens.
"If this mine is exploited, there will simply be no one left in Mehri," says one resident.
They accuse supporters of the mine's operation of being willing to poison the residents of an already difficult, border town for money.
If the process continues and they are not heard, the residents emphasise, they will embark on lengthy protests involving even more citizens.
The Litchk copper mine in the Syunik region was suspended in 2018. The regional administration was due to hold a hearing on the subject on April 5, but it was disrupted.
