UK's Baroness Nicholson undertakes four day visit to Azerbaijan
POLITICS 29 May 2023 - 11:00
UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy, Baroness Emma Nicholson, undertakes an official four-day visit to Azerbaijan on 29 May.
Within the framework of the visit, Baroness Nicholson will take part in Baku Energy Week and Baku Energy Forum, emphasising the UK’s commitment to strengthening economic ties between the UK and Azerbaijan.
In Baku, the official will meet Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, Parliamentary Speaker Sahiba Qafarova and representatives of energy, construction and health companies, said the UK embassy in Baku, Trend reports.
Besides Baroness Nicholson will participate in Baku Connect Event to discuss Azerbaijan's energy market opportunities and energy transition.
Baroness Nicholson was last in Azerbaijan in May 2022 to mark the 30th anniversary of UK-Azerbaijan diplomatic relations and to expand trade relations between the two countries.
Emma Harriet Nicholson, Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne is a British politician, who has been a life peer (appointed members of the peerage whose titles cannot be inherited – ed.) since 1997.
She was elected as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Torridge and West Devon in 1987, before switching to the Liberal Democrats in 1995. She was also the Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for South East England from 1999 to 2009. In 2016, she announced she was re-joining the Conservative Party "with tremendous pleasure".
Azerbaijan and the UK are cooperating in different spheres of the economy. There are already 30 years of successful cooperation between the two countries in the oil and gas sector, which entered a new stage of development in line with the challenges of the global energy sector. The energy sector accounts for $ 28.8 billion out of $ 30.6 billion of the UK investments in Azerbaijan's economy. The UK is also the biggest investor in Azerbaijan.
