Ministry: Azerbaijan reaffirms commitment to Syria’s sovereignty

18 July 2025 16:22

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan has issued an official statement regarding recent developments in southern Syria, following Israeli military actions and renewed efforts by Syrian forces to reestablish control in the area.

In response to a media inquiry, Aykhan Hajizada, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasised that Azerbaijan is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Syria, Caliber.Az reports.

“We once again express our firm support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, indivisibility, and political unity of the Syrian Arab Republic.”

Hajizada underscored that the restoration of peace, security, and stability in Syria remains a matter of priority and concern for Azerbaijan, reiterating Baku’s consistent position on the respect for international law and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.

Violence in Syria broke out on July 14 between government forces and Druze-led factions, leaving at least 34 dead.

After several days of conflict, a ceasefire was declared on July 17, which involved the partial withdrawal of Syrian troops from the province as part of a power-sharing deal with local leaders.

However, tensions reignited the following day. On July 18, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa publicly accused Druze militants of violating the ceasefire.

He also condemned what he termed Israel’s "persistent and blatant interference" in Syria’s internal matters, cautioning that such actions were worsening the current instability.
