Azerbaijan’s Shusha declared Cultural Capital of Islamic World for 2024 PHOTO

Azerbaijani Minister of Culture Adil Karimli has presented the candidacy of Shusha city as the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World 2024.

The presentation was made at the 12th Conference of Ministers of Culture of the Islamic World in Doha (Qatar), within the framework of the ISESCO programme on the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Ministry.

A video about Shusha was shown at the event. By the unanimous opinion of the conference participants, Shusha was declared the cultural capital of the Islamic world for 2024.

The year 2022 was declared the "Year of Shusha City" in Azerbaijan. Music festivals, poetry days, and numerous cultural events of national and international scale were held to support the revival of the city's cultural life. The International Turkic Culture Organization (TURKSOY) declared Shusha the cultural capital of the Turkic world in 2023.

To recap, the 12th Conference of Ministers of Culture in the Islamic World kicked off in Doha, Qatar on September 25.

A delegation led by Azerbaijani Minister of Culture Adil Karimli is on a visit to Doha to participate in the event.

Karimli attended the opening ceremony of the 12th conference entitled “Towards the renewal of cultural activity in the Islamic world”.

Issues such as the basic principles and indicators of sustainable development of cultural policy, mechanisms for the development of the “Capital of Culture in the Islamic World” programme and the expansion of joint cultural activity in combating illicit trafficking in cultural property were considered during the event this year.

The nomination document submitted by Azerbaijan to declare Shusha the “Cultural capital of the Islamic world for 2024”, as well as a speech and presentation on Shusha are planned to be considered at the conference.
