Azerbaijan’s State Security Service is conducting a preliminary investigation in connection with the investigation of numerous terrorist offences committed by illegal Armenian armed formations operating in the territory of the temporary deployment of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The collected evidence revealed reasonable suspicions that Ruben Vardanyan (born in 1968), currently a citizen of Armenia, committed crimes under Articles 214-1 (financing of terrorism), 279.3 (participation in the creation and activities of illegal armed formations or groups) and 318.1 (illegal crossing of the state border of Azerbaijan) of the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan Republic, Caliber.Az reports, citing the State Security Service.
Ruben Vardanyan was detained on September 27 and brought to criminal liability as an accused, and a measure of restraint in the form of detention was chosen by court decision.
Ruben Vardanyan is accused of the following case: being a foreign citizen, he illegally crossed the state border of Azerbaijan, entered the territory of temporary deployment of Russian peacekeepers in Azerbaijan’s Garabagh economic region to commit terrorist acts in September 2022, and participated in organizing the activities of illegal armed groups in territory of Azerbaijan, in supplying weapons, ammunition, explosives, military equipment to these illegal formations, which carried out attacks on organizations, departments and individuals, leading to deaths and other serious consequences.
In addition, he financed terrorism, directing funds to organize terrorist activities of illegal armed groups.
Currently, investigative and operational activities are ongoing in the criminal case.
