Northern Cyprus, Serbia, Georgia welcome historic Azerbaijan-Armenia peace declaration PHOTO

10 August 2025 11:46

The recent trilateral meeting between Azerbaijan, Armenia, and the United States at the White House, culminating in a joint peace declaration, has received warm praise from regional and international leaders, including the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the Serbian government, and the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament.

Ersin Tatar, President of the TRNC, hailed the Washington talks as a “truly historic” milestone that opens the door to a peace process based on mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, the rejection of hostility, and the rebuilding of diplomatic and trade relations, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media outlets.

In an official statement, Tatar congratulated Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the Azerbaijani people on this important step, while also commending Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for his political will throughout the process.

Highlighting the significance of restoring communication between western Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Tatar pointed to the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) project embedded in the joint declaration as a key driver for regional economic growth. He also stressed the importance of the United States lifting restrictions on Azerbaijan, which creates fresh opportunities for Azerbaijani-American relations and broader South Caucasus prosperity. Drawing parallels with the Cyprus situation, Tatar emphasized that lasting peace requires cooperation between two equal states recognized internationally.

Serbia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed strong support for the joint declaration, praising the constructive efforts of both Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Serbian statement highlighted the pivotal role played by U.S. President Donald Trump in achieving the agreement, describing it as “an important step toward lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in the South Caucasus.” Serbia affirmed its commitment to fostering peaceful dialogue, regional cooperation, and respect for international law among all parties.

Meanwhile, Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, congratulated both Azerbaijan and Armenia on the landmark agreement. In a social media post, Papuashvili called it “a historic step toward reconciliation” with the potential to end decades of conflict that have harmed regional stability and prosperity. He emphasized that the agreement, facilitated by President Trump, could mark a new era of security and cooperation in the South Caucasus. Papuashvili expressed readiness to collaborate on unlocking the full potential of regional partnerships.

The joint declaration, signed on August 8 in Washington, represents a significant diplomatic breakthrough that promises to reshape the geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus through enhanced peace, stability, and economic development.
