Azerbaijani ambassador delivers credentials to president of Suriname PHOTO

Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Suriname with his official residence in the city of Brasilia Rashad Novruz has delivered credentials to President of Suriname Chandrikapersad Santokhi.

Azerbaijan’s national anthem was performed at the ceremony organised at the Presidential Palace, the Azerbaijani embassy in Brazil told Azertac.

During the meeting, the president of Suriname expressed interest in the development of bilateral ties, emphasising that he wants to bring cooperation in the political, humanitarian, economic, oil and gas fields, as well as in the field of food security, to a new level, increase the number of multilateral diplomatic talks and mutual support agreements.

President of Suriname congratulated President Aliyev on his victory in the snap presidential elections and on the election of Azerbaijan as the host for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change - COP29. The president of Suriname asked to convey sincere greetings and best wishes to President Aliyev.

Ambassador Novruz conveyed the greetings of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to the president of Suriname.

Azerbaijan and Suriname have established bilateral and multilateral relations based on mutually beneficial cooperation, in particular within the UN, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. The importance of further development of these relations was brought to attention.

Novruz also held meetings with foreign minister of Suriname and other officials as part of his visit to Paramaribo, capital of Suriname. During the meetings, views on issues of mutual interest were exchanged, and prospects for possible cooperation were discussed.

Suriname is currently experiencing an oil boom and is attracting foreign investments from various countries, including the US, China and European countries. Along with the mining industry, the agricultural sector is developing in the country.

Earlier, Suriname was a colony of the Netherlands, then an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The country gained full independence in 1975. Although only 13 per cent of the country's population is Muslim, Suriname is a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
