Ambassador: Zangezur corridor can be vital in strengthening trust between Azerbaijan, Armenia

03 March 2024 15:17

Azerbaijani President's Representative on Special Assignments, Ambassador Elchin Amirbayov has said that the Zangezur corridor can be vital in strengthening trust between Azerbaijan, Armenia.

Amirbayov made these remarks during a panel discussion at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Türkiye, according to Report.

“The Zangezur corridor can become an important component of strengthening trust and peacebuilding between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” he noted.

While delivering a speech at the session “New Dynamics of Cooperation in Eurasia,” he emphasised that besides the economic benefits, the restoration of transport relations between countries in a post-conflict period can also play the role of an important confidence-building measure and become an effective tool for building peace.

“The Zangezur corridor project, which not only can establish direct transport relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but also put an end to the economic isolation of Armenia in the region, can be cited as a brilliant example” Amirbayov said.

The ambassador noted that the implementation of this project will benefit and fully meet the interests of other regional countries, primarily Türkiye, Russia and Iran.

“The Zangezur corridor can become an alternative route to the already existing Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, connecting China with Europe through Central Asia and the South Caucasus via Azerbaijan and Georgia,” he said.

“We hope that Yerevan, which has been avoiding fulfilling its obligations for more than three years and is actually blocking the restoration of a route through Zangezur, will finally realise the full benefit of this project for Armenia too. Otherwise, the coveted ‘Crossroads of Peace’ may remain a regional dead end,” Amirbayov added.
