Armenia renews shelling on Azerbaijani Army positions

17 March 2025 08:54

On March 16, the Armenian armed forces launched multiple attacks on Azerbaijani military positions in the Gorus region, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence has stated.

As per the ministry's statement, the latest incident occurred between 20:10 and 20:45 when Armenian units stationed near the Burun settlement opened fire on Azerbaijani positions using small arms.

Earlier that evening, at approximately 18:35, Armenian forces from positions near the Khazinavar settlement targeted Azerbaijani military positions, again employing small arms.

The first attack of the day took place at around 09:45, with Armenian units positioned near the Digh settlement firing at Azerbaijani positions using similar weaponry.

Despite the repeated armed provocations, no casualties were reported.

The Azerbaijani side has condemned these actions, describing them as violations of regional stability and a threat to the ongoing normalization efforts between the two countries.

Efforts to achieve a lasting peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia have been ongoing since the 2020 Second Karabakh War, which resulted in Azerbaijan restoring its territorial integrity.

In recent years, negotiations have intensified, with both sides engaging in discussions to establish a formal peace treaty. The talks have focused on key issues such as the recognition of territorial integrity, border delimitation, and the elimination of longstanding territorial claims. Azerbaijan has consistently maintained that Armenia must amend its constitution to remove any clauses that challenge Azerbaijan’s sovereignty.

The latest round of negotiations has led to a significant breakthrough, with both Baku and Yerevan confirming that the draft Agreement on Peace and the Establishment of Interstate Relations is now finalized and ready for signing. This marks a major step toward normalizing relations between the two countries.
