Armenia to host first EU summit in Yerevan in May 2026
Armenia will host its first summit with the European Union in Yerevan on May 5, 2026, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.
High-level EU officials are expected to attend, including European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
In March, the Armenian parliament passed a law initiating the process for the country to join the EU. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasised that the move does not automatically trigger accession, noting that any decision to join would require a public referendum.
Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan added that the bill was a citizen-led initiative, which gathered the required number of signatures to reach parliament.
Russia has expressed concern over Armenia’s EU ambitions. Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk said the country’s potential EU membership would conflict with its current status in the Eurasian Economic Union, describing the move as the beginning of Armenia’s withdrawal from the bloc.
