Armenian defence ministry rejects claims of border incursion in Syunik
Armenia’s Ministry of Defence has denied allegations made by a former servicemember that an attempted incursion occurred near a military base in the southern Syunik province.
The claim was made by Naira Gevorgyan, a former Armenian servicemember and reserve colonel, who said in an interview that a suspected incursion took place on December 7–8 in the direction of a military base in the town of Meghri. Gevorgyan also alleged that Armenian troops were ordered not to open fire during the incident, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.
“The statement made by an individual who, to put it mildly, has ‘distinguished herself’ through an inglorious record of service in the armed forces is not only disinformation, but also yet another unsuccessful and failed attempt at an information attack directed against the Republic of Armenia, its state institutions, and the military,” he said.
He criticised the former servicemember’s claims as unfounded and urged media outlets to avoid republishing what he described as fabricated information. Torosyan also warned against contributing to what he called “hybrid threats” targeting Armenia.
The spokesperson added that relevant authorities may review the statement and consider whether it warrants a legal assessment.
