Armenian PM announces failure of protest movement

23 June 2024 17:59

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan thinks that the protest movement has failed.

Pashinyan made these remarks at the fourth political forum of the ruling “Civil Contract” party in Hankavan settlement, Caliber.Az reports citing the Armenian media.

The Armenian prime minister is convinced that the movement has failed because the Armenian society understands and accepts the idea of “real Armenia”, which the government put forward 1-2 years ago, and notes that this idea belongs to the Armenian society, rather than to him or his party.

“Finally, a political force has appeared in Armenia that takes ideas from people and shapes them as a political ideology. People are not an object, but a subject of this ideology. The ruling majority is the speaker of society,” Pashinyan said.

Pashinyan is confident that for the first time in a thousand-year history, the ideology of people can become a state ideology.

As for “real Armenia”, this is such Armenia where people do not want to suffer and fight, they want to live.

“The isolated elites usually tried to introduce ideologies among people created by themselves or others, often imposing them through administrative levers, sometimes by using force,” he noted.

Protests, led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, head of the Tavush Patriarchal Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, started after Baku and Yerevan agreed on border delimitation in the Tavush region.

In fact, Yerevan agreed to transfer four villages that were part of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic to Baku. The villages have been under the control of Armenia since the 1990s. The Tavush for the Motherland movement demands the resignation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, accusing him of unilaterally transferring the villages to Azerbaijan.
