Armenian PM rules out dual-citizenship candidate for premiership
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has confirmed that individuals holding foreign citizenship cannot be nominated for the office of prime minister under the country’s Constitution and laws.
His remarks came in response to the nomination of businessman Samvel Karapetyan by the Strong Armenia party, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
Speaking to reporters, Pashinyan emphasized that Armenian legislation explicitly bars candidates with second or third citizenship from running for parliament or the premiership.
“According to the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of Armenia, a person with second citizenship, and in this case also third-country citizenship, cannot be a candidate for either deputy or prime minister. Therefore, what you are saying does not exist either de jure or de facto. I do not consider it necessary to comment on something that does not exist,” Pashinyan stated.
