Armenian truckers protest changes to Russia entry rules affecting cargo shipments
On October 16, truck drivers held a protest outside the Armenian government building, demanding a resolution to migration issues affecting entry into Russia.
The protest was triggered by recent changes to Russia’s visa-free regime, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
Since September 10, citizens of visa-free countries entering Russia for non-work purposes can stay in the country for a total of 90 days per calendar year instead of the previous 180 days.
Before the Cabinet meeting, Armenia’s Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan addressed the protesters, stating that authorities at the highest level are working on the issue.
The minister did not disclose details, citing potential interference with ongoing work, but assured that the problem affects not only the drivers themselves but also the country’s leadership.
Earlier, drivers had already staged protests over these changes, demanding not to be classified as labour migrants. They argued this classification would allow them to operate under the old rules and continue transporting goods without legal obstacles.
