Attempted Azerbaijan-Iran border breach sparks gunfire at Goytepe PHOTO
On February 20, the Goytepe border unit detected an attempt by four unidentified individuals to cross from Iran into Azerbaijan, resulting in an exchange of fire.
The border post was immediately mobilised under the “To Arms” command, and patrols fired a warning shot into the air to stop the intruders, Caliber.Az reports, citing the State Border Service.
The intruders ignored orders to stop and opened fire, abandoning their belongings. Using the cover of darkness and difficult terrain, they managed to escape in the direction from which they had come.
At the scene, authorities recovered three bundles of narcotics totalling 33.9 kilograms, along with other physical evidence.
The opposing side was informed of the incident through the border liaison. Operational, investigative, and search activities are ongoing.
