Azerbaijan-Armenia peace talks continue, foreign minister confirms

26 July 2024 13:03

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has said that negotiations on the normalisation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia continue.

He made the remarks during a joint press conference with Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, Caliber.Az reports.

According to him, Somalia has always supported the just position of Azerbaijan. This was both during the 44-day war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2020 and after it.

"I informed my counterpart about the process of restoration of the liberated territories, the continuing mine threat, as well as the negotiations on the normalisation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia," Bayramov said.

Moreover, talking about the ties between Azerbaijan and Somalia, Bayramov said that this year, the countries celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Somalia.

Bayramov stressed that there are currently various opportunities for cooperation between our countries, in particular within the framework of international organisations such as the UN, Non-Aligned Movement and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

The minister added that expansion of ties with African countries has always been a priority for Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijani top diplomat noted that Azerbaijan has made great efforts to promote the interests of African countries on international platforms during its chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Meanwhile, Bayramov noted that Azerbaijan is prepared to render humanitarian support to Somalia.

"We offer an educational programme for member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, with several young Somalis having already benefited. This cooperation will continue in the future. This year, we have several events planned to be held in Azerbaijan, including the major COP29 conference. We look forward to welcoming the Somali delegation to this important event," Bayramov noted.

To recap, Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.

Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.

The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
