Azerbaijan calls for diplomatic resolution to Israel-Iran tensions

Azerbaijan has expressed deep concern over the recent Israeli military operation against Iran, urging both sides to avoid further escalation and prioritise diplomatic engagement.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 13, Baku called for the immediate de-escalation of tensions and the protection of civilians amid rising instability in the Middle East, Caliber.Az reports.

“We are deeply concerned by the military operation carried out by the State of Israel against the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the ministry said.

Azerbaijan called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and return to the negotiating table. “We urge the parties to resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomatic means, in accordance with the norms and principles of international law,” the statement continued.

Highlighting humanitarian concerns, the Foreign Ministry underscored the importance of safeguarding civilians and infrastructure.

“We particularly emphasize the importance of ensuring the safety of the civilian population and facilities.”

The ministry also stressed the need to intensify diplomatic communication, noting that “it is important to continue contacts through diplomatic channels and efforts within the framework of relevant international mechanisms in order to prevent further escalation of the situation in the Middle East.”

To recall, on June 13, 2025, Israel launched a large-scale airstrike targeting over 100 sites across Iran, including key nuclear and missile facilities in Tehran, Natanz, Ahvaz, and East Azerbaijan Province.

The operation involved around 200 aircraft and more than 330 precision-guided munitions, aiming to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons development and eliminate senior IRGC commanders and scientists.

Israeli leaders described the strikes as a preemptive move against existential threats from Iran. Tehran blamed Israel and the US for the attack and vowed strong retaliation, launching over 100 drones towards Israel and closing its airspace.

The escalation has endangered nuclear talks and raised fears of a wider regional conflict.
