Azerbaijan could emerge as regional green energy hub, says Masdar executive

02 June 2026 18:57

Azerbaijan has the potential to become a central pillar in regional and interregional energy connectivity, particularly in the expansion of renewable energy and cross-border electricity trade, according to a senior executive at UAE-based Masdar.

Speaking at the 31st Baku Energy Forum, Abdulla Zayed, Director of Business Development and Projects at Masdar, said Azerbaijan was well positioned to act as a hub linking Central Asia and Europe through large-scale green energy initiatives, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

He highlighted the country’s natural advantages, including significant solar and wind resources, as well as its strategic geographic location and access to the Caspian Sea, which could support the development of transregional energy corridors.

“Azerbaijan has the ability to export electricity in multiple directions and act as a bridge for connectivity between Central Asia and Europe,” Zayed said, noting that the country could also play a balancing role in regional power distribution and energy trade.

He pointed to Azerbaijan’s established regulatory framework as a key factor in attracting foreign investment and enabling large-scale renewable energy projects, adding that the country already had relevant implementation experience in the sector.

Zayed also emphasised Azerbaijan’s transition over the past decade from a predominantly oil and gas-based economy towards a more diversified energy mix, underpinned by increasing investment in low-carbon and renewable energy infrastructure.

“This development sends a clear message to the international community,” he said. “If Azerbaijan can achieve this transformation while maintaining its hydrocarbon base, it demonstrates that similar transitions are possible elsewhere.”

He concluded that Azerbaijan could serve as both a practical energy hub and a broader example for global energy transition efforts, supporting greater regional integration and cooperation.
