Azerbaijan exports 300 million cubic metres of gas to Serbia since 2024, official says PHOTO

Azerbaijan has exported around 300 million cubic metres of natural gas to Serbia since the beginning of 2024, according to Azerbaijani Finance Minister Sahil Babayev.

Speaking at the 9th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Serbia, held in Belgrade, Babayev highlighted growing cooperation across the energy, transport, and logistics sectors, Caliber.Az reports per the Finance Ministry.

The minister said that collaboration between the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), and Srbijagas on the construction of a 500 MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in the city of Niš will elevate the energy partnership between the two countries to a new level.

Babayev also emphasised that strengthening transport and logistics links remains a key priority for both nations. He pointed to new regional initiatives—such as transport corridors and the Green Energy Corridor proposed within the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process—as promising opportunities for enhanced cooperation and broader regional connectivity.

On the Serbian side, Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković said that Belgrade aims to hold the first meeting of the Strategic Partnership Council between Azerbaijan and Serbia before the end of 2025. Selaković noted that bilateral relations have a strategic character, as established by the 2013 Declaration on Strategic Partnership, the 2018 Joint Action Plan, and the 2022 Memorandum of Understanding on creating the Strategic Partnership Council.

He also expressed confidence that Azerbaijan will take an active role in EXPO 2027, which will be held in Belgrade from May to August 2027.

Energy cooperation has become a central pillar of Azerbaijani-Serbian relations. On November 15, 2023, SOCAR and Srbijagas signed a contract for the annual supply of up to 400 million cubic metres of Azerbaijani gas to Serbia for the 2024–2026 period. Subsequently, on September 26, 2024, the two companies signed an additional agreement for the supply of 1 million cubic metres of gas per day from November 1, 2024 to April 1, 2025.
