Waitangi Day is New Zealand’s national day, observed annually on 6 February to mark the anniversary of the 1840 signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, an agreement between the British Crown and many Māori chiefs that is widely regarded as the foundation of the modern nation’s constitutional relationship.
The holiday was first commemorated in 1934 after the Treaty House and grounds were gifted to the nation, and officially became a nationwide public holiday in 1974, following decades of evolving recognition and political debate.
